Over the last six months there’s been nearly a ninety five percent increase in the number of people doing online searches for dark colored kitchens – particularly those in navy blue of black. Matt powder finishes are very much in and one of the biggest style influences are Shaker-style units in blue. If you’re planning a kitchen overhaul this is the trendy way to go.
It’s Written In The Stars…
This next season, astronomy and zodiac patterns are in, star strewn plates, galactic surfaces and cosmic tile works with subtle hints of non-glittery sparkle and light. From subtle hints to properly out-there images of the sky at night, celestial motifs have been shooting across interiors and are set to continue into the new season.
Embellishments That Won’t Infringe
Taking inspiration from the catwalk, fringing is going to make a comeback in our interiors throughout the next year. Think about embellishing cushions, lamps and mirrors with this hippy inspired trend using a range of different materials and styles, anything from lace to rope or brightly colored thread.
Get Back To Brass Tacks
Brass is making a comeback – so if you’re thinking of bathroom or kitchen remodeling, taps made from this durable material are a serious consideration for on trend chic. It’s a timeless look, and transcends fashions – brass will offer a great contrast to more modern worktops and also work well with the Scandi-noir dark kitchen units that are back en vogue. You could choose to make it extra cool and edgy by using factory/industry inspired brass designs too.
Dare To Bare?
After a few years watching grey and grey-scale colors make their way to the top of the decorating charts, nudes and warm, earthy neutrals are back in play. Soft sandy tones are back, and revitalised to give your home a subtle warmth and welcoming glow.
Color Of The Year For 2019
Which leads neatly onto the recently announced Dulux Color of the Year – Spiced Honey is the shade we should all be aiming to work into our interiors. It’s a super warm caramel tone that has woody, sandy and inviting amber notes, perfect for all seasons.
There is also a second contender, which many design experts are touting as another option in the form of Nightwatch Green, which is bottle green’s slightly moodier, older sister. It’s a strong look, and perhaps not one for a whole room, but rather to bring in, in hits – such as a smart rug, or vase, in contrast to a paler hued wall or floor.
Materials And Style Inspiration
1. Concrete
Brutalist design is back (kind of). Concrete is becoming more on trend for bathrooms, giving a utilitarian and functional design space for bathrooms in particular. New techniques in print and color allow for a range of different finishes to be achieved from the honed and polished to stark and textured.
2. 1950s Mad Men Chic
Mid century styling never goes out of the style really, but next year it really will feature with more abundance. Classic Eames chairs are making more of an appearance and cocktail cabinets will begin to feature in homes once more.
3. Linen fabrics
Whilst there’s something to be said for neat lines and crisply ironed bed sheets, the in-trend for the next year is crumpled linens for the bedroom, especially if they’re in stonewashed tones. The fabric will get softer and cosier as it is washed and used and will remain naturally breathable, keeping you snug in winter and cool in summer. What’s not to love?
4. Distressed Mirrors
If you’re thinking about new mirrors, then crazed glass with antique looking frames are the biggest buzz. Silvery tones and grey backgrounds will tone in well with other styles in your home and they’re easy to fix up on a budget if you’re into shabby chic Perth look.
5. Inject some tropical tastes
Whilst there seems to be a raft of subtle colors and tones on the whole, there always has to be an injection of vibrancy somewhere along the line and this next season it will come from the tropics. 6. Graphic patterned rugs
Bold, graphic, strong patterned rugs are back in vogue – and it doesn’t matter what color tone you choose either, from whispering pastels to bold neons and even stark monochrome, it’s the boldness of the pattern that matters.
Make Your Dwelling Multi-Purpose
As we become more immersed in technology and upgrading what we have, it makes sense to try and put this to good use in terms of elements of design. Moveable walls and multi-purpose built in units offer us the chance to make our homes multi-functional and much more practical, whilst still keeping a funky and on trend edge.
From modern iterations on Murphy beds to movable walls and multi-purpose built-in’s, convertible dwellings are one of the most sensible and intriguing 2019 interior design trends to get our attention.
The same goes for furniture too, and designers are now catching up on to the need for smart, multi-purpose furnishings that are smaller in scale but that can be put to many different uses.
Boho Is Back…Even Though It Never Went Away
Although Boho chic is always with the world of design in one way or another, sometimes designers felt that the ‘many layered’ approach to interiors was often way too much. However, it’s making a comeback in 2019. It’s now time to reinvest in a more laid back approach to furnishing in some rooms of the home. Invest in layers of fresh looking chintzes, layers and lace again.
Look Up To The Ceiling…
It isn’t very often that ceilings are given much of a look in, in terms of design trends – so this next year they’re having a big revival. In fact, we’re going back to the Art Deco Jazz Baby 1920s to get inspiration. Ornate molded tin designs are coming back, as are expressively painted, lacquered or wallpapered and molding covered ceilings. A remodeled ceiling can sometimes negate the need for any other work to be done in the room, as it can provide a focal point and something unusual and nuanced to talk about.
Being More Eco-Friendly
It stands to reason that whatever trend you’re investing in or deciding on, eco-friendly is the way to go. Repurpose and reuse as much old material as possible. Hunt on online marketplaces and auction sites for vintage inspired pieces that suit the trends you want to invest in. Leftover materials and fabrics can be rehomed and put to good use, and it’s true what they say ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’.
